The short answer

New home wells here are usually 505–572 ft deep, more than twice the ~200 ft a national cost guide assumes for Springfield. At published rates of $22–$52/ft, drilling alone works out to roughly $11,100–$29,700 before the pump, tank and hookup.

Anatomy of a private well

  1. 1Casing and grout seal: steel or plastic pipe from just above ground down into solid rock, sealed with grout so surface water can't run down the outside.
  2. 2Open borehole: below the casing the hole runs through bare rock. Water seeps in where it crosses fractures. Locally the median total depth is 505–572 ft.
  3. 3Submersible pump: hangs on a drop pipe below the static water level. In a drought it may need to be lowered.
  4. 4Pitless adapter: where the water line leaves the casing, buried below the frost line so it won't freeze.
  5. 5Pressure tank: inside the house. It stores water under pressure so the pump doesn't start every time a tap opens.
Simplified and not to scale. Casing depth and well design are set by the permitted driller under Missouri well construction rules.

What affects the price

Depth
The biggest driver. County medians are 505–572 ft, and rock conditions vary by property.
Casing
Casing runs down to solid rock. More casing means more cost.
Pump & pressure tank
Priced separately. Deeper wells need larger submersible pumps.
Hookup & trenching
The run from the wellhead to the house, plus electrical work.
Site access
Rig access, slope and distance from the road.

Check the driller's DNR permit

Missouri law (RSMo 256.607) requires anyone in business as a well installation contractor to hold a DNR permit. Look it up before you sign anything.

Pumps, pressure tanks and water tests

Need well service near Springfield? Start with the problem you're seeing, whether it's no water, uneven pressure or a water test for a home you're buying.

No water or low pressure

A pump problem or drought may leave you with little or no water. Have a permitted pump installer diagnose the cause before deciding on well pump replacement. Check the contractor in DNR's WIMS search before you hire.

Pressure tank replacement

If your pump cycles on and off often, the pressure tank may need attention. Ask the contractor to check the pump and tank together before recommending pressure tank replacement.

Buying a home with a well?

Ask the seller for the well record and look for it in DNR's WIMS Well Search. Share any record you find with the contractor assessing the well before you buy.

An old well you no longer use

An unused or old well should be assessed for plugging by a permitted well contractor. Have a permitted contractor do the plugging, and check the contractor in DNR's WIMS search before hiring.

Common questions

How deep will my well be?

No one knows until drilling starts. As a baseline, the median new home well is 505 ft in Greene County and 572 ft in Christian County (our calculation from MO DNR records, domestic wells 2020+, checked Nov 2026).

Does a driller need a license in Missouri?

Yes. RSMo 256.607 requires a Missouri DNR permit to be in business as a well installation contractor. Look up the permit on the DNR site before you sign.

Does the 2026 drought matter?

It can. As of Oct 27, 2026, most of Christian County was in extreme drought. Some existing wells may need the pump lowered or the well deepened, and a permitted pro should assess it.

Do you drill wells?

No. We are an independent referral and information service. The driller we refer you to may pay us a referral fee. That costs you nothing, and you are never obligated to hire.

What happens after I send a request?

A person reviews it and, if a permitted driller serves your area, shares it with that one driller. If none does, we tell you. We can't promise availability, timing or price.
